Valerian Root has been used since the times of Ancient Greece and Rome for stress reduction. Today, based on human clinical trials, valerian root is sold as a dietary supplement nutritional supplement to ward off restlessness and anxiety. Valerian is also used as a muscle relaxant and to treat irritable bowel syndrome and has been shown to reduce blood pressure. In clinical trials, the subjects being tested described immediate feelings of relaxation and reduction in anxiety and stress in the absence of drowsiness. Some people have described feeling more focused when taking valerian because of the reduction of stress, allowing for a more productive work period. Valerian root generally does not lose effectiveness over time. In this regard Valerian supplementation does not induce sleep, but has been described as providing a balance which permits more productive work, but also a more restful sleep.
